2012 Cox Plate Betting – Manighar Out

October 11th, 2012

The 2012 Cox Plate betting market received a shake-up after the withdrawal of Manighar earlier this morning.

The Peter Moody-trained gelding suffered a knee injury in training that will require surgery and will now miss the remainder of the Spring Racing Carnival.

The withdrawal of Manighar has led to the odds of the leading Cox Plate contenders shortening at bookmaker.com.au.

Undefeated colt Pierro remains Cox Plate favourite and will have his final lead-up in this Saturdays Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident that Pierro can become the first horse since Red Anchor in 1984 to claim the Caulfield Guineas-Cox Plate double and believes the son of Lonhro is on the verge of greatness.

“He might be the best horse you’ve seen in a long time,” Waterhouse said

“He’s starting to get a record like Tulloch.

“You go back and look through the record books, what horse has done this at present? He’s only had eight starts, he’s only a baby. He’s a really, really good horse.”

Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon has been well backed in 2012 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup betting markets, after his strong performance in the Turnbull Stakes, and is now priced at $5.50 at bookmaker.com.au.

Connections have decided that the Montjeu stallion will not run in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) in order to remain fresh for the Cox Plate.

On the next line of Cox Plate betting is New Zealand galloper Ocean Park who will have his final hit out in this weekend’s Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

The four-year-old won the Underwood Stakes (1800m) in impressive fashion and is expected to start the Caulfield Stakes as odds on favourite.

Another Cox Plate contender running this weekend is champion mare More Joyous.

The daughter of More Than Ready will make history if she can carry 60kg to win the Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

However, owner John Singleton is worried about the weight and is considering pulling More Joyous out of the race.

“The 60kg does concern me. We always thought she would get 59kg, which was more than enough anyway,” Singleton said.

More Joyous has been a drifter in the Cox Plate betting market at bookmaker.com.au and is now priced at $7.50.
