The seven-year-old The Cleaner is fast becoming a punters favourite for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.
The surprising hero among the racing world has gone from strength to strength since January and is now enjoying some much-needed down time in a paddock next to his Longford stable before picking up the pace next week as he begins his 2014 Cox Plate preparations.
Popularity for the gelding has increased following three back-to-back wins in his 2014 spring racing campaign thus far, which adds to a total five wins and five seconds from his last 11 starts.
The Cleaner is currently available at odds of $17 with leading bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au.
Wins in the Don’t Hold Back Handicap (1600m), Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) have seen the in-form gelding performing extremely well during spring.
Trainer Mick Burles told TVN The Cleaner hasn’t had a gallop since his JRA Cup win on September 26. But the gelding is happy enjoying himself, and continues to improve.
“He’s as happy as a pig in you know what and so am I,” Burles said.
“He’ll have two gallops next week and one more before he goes over to Melbourne.”
Burles noted interest in his gelding continues to grow, having already been offered sponsorship deals from a corporate bookmaker and national cleaning business.
The trainer rejected both, opting to concentrate on the horse 100%.
“All I’m concentrating on is the horse and having him fit for the Cox Plate,” Burles told TVN.
“I can’t wait until October 25 comes around.”
