Side Glance, the Andrew Balding-trained UK galloper, appears to be a likely starter in the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley next week, favouring it over a back-to-back start in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington the day before.
The eight-year-old was last seen in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) last Saturday, in which he finished third to Fawkner.
Side Glance worked his way to the lead and kept a nice tempo going. He battled bravely all the way home as per usual.
The pair is due to face off again, with Fawkner leading the early Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a price of $3.80 while Side Glance is offering $34.
Assistant trainer Leanne Masterton told racing.com the gelding came through the race well with connections eyeing a start in the 2014 Cox Plate.
“We’ll monitor this week and if all’s well on Monday or Tuesday morning when we have to declare then we’ll look at entering him for the Cox Plate,” Masterton said.
“He seems to have come out of the (Caulfield Stakes) really well, he’s eating well and he’s moving well.”
The gelding already won the Mackinnon Stakes last year and connections are looking to improve his Cox Plate standing, which resulted in a sixth placing last year.
“He was very fresh going into last year’s Cox Plate, probably too fresh and that’s why we decided to run him in the Caulfield Stakes this year.”
Side Glance is known to take the lead early, doing so in both the Caulfield Stakes and Mackinnon last year, but Masterton said she is looking forward to The Cleaner setting the pace in the Cox Plate.
“He’s made the running three or four times in his life and the rest of the time he’s come from behind so he should get a nice trail in behind,” she said.
“There’s nothing worse than trying to quicken off a slow pace so with the good speed Side Glance should be able to settle.”
